“I once had a consent talk and the person who ran it made it seem like it was all men who were the issue. As a result I have not been keen to go to sex talks since. However, this program has changed my mind and I am very grateful for that.”

"I have been a PDHPE teacher in the past for many years, so this topic is especially interesting to me. The rapid changes in our society, with regards to these issues, is immensely important for us as educators to keep up-to-date. I teach the senior classes Society and Culture, of which gender is a topic, so great PD for me."

“Joyce and Angelique are passionate about this issue and have worked tirelessly to ensure that Australian young people have good quality, accurate and credible information on this complex and controversial topic.

When they first presented their education session to me, I was totally blown away by what they had come up with. This is such a difficult area to work in and they have managed to come up with a product that has strong, simple and powerful messages that every young person needs to hear.”

“Consent Labs has clearly worked hard at developing workshops that reduce the unnecessary stigma around conversations of consent. By encouraging open discussion, I was able to learn about the fundamentals of consent, as well as how to approach consent when alcohol and other drugs are involved.”

“Consent Labs program provided our students with a strong foundation in consent education, tailored to their understanding and needs. Despite being a small school, the sessions were engaging and impactful, helping our students grasp the importance of respectful relationships. Their approach made the content relatable, ensuring every student felt heard and valued in these important discussions. The facilitators created a safe and supportive environment, encouraging our students to ask questions and explore complex topics to build their confidence. We are excited to have them back next year!”

To be honest before the session I thought not another consent talk that covers everything we know… but this session was fabulous. It wasn’t condescending, it included interesting and new information and was extremely engaging. The speaker Fran was amazing and such a great speaker and I would definitely recommend to Consent Labs to other institutions !!!!”

"The facilitators were highly relatable and were able to hold the space really well despite the large audience. They struck the right mix of fun and seriousness with their short activities, discussion and scenarios. The students were very positive about the presentation and we will be sure to invite Consent Labs back for more sessions."

Our Story

Have you ever heard comments like “men don’t cry” or “throw like a girl”? Have you ever seen someone catcalled on the street? Have you ever felt like your high school sex education didn’t leave you feeling empowered, and maybe even a little bit under-equipped?So have we.In 2016, at the age of 19 years old, we decided we wanted to do something to change this. That’s how Consent Labs began. As two young women, we felt so passionately about the need to foster a society where sexual violence was not the norm; where young people of all genders didn’t have to experience violence and even more than that, where young people were empowered to engage in good quality, fulfilling and respectful relationships. We had a clear vision of the future of sex education, and we dove head-first into making thisa reality. We spent hours and hours speaking to other young people to figure out what they wanted to see out of their education, building relationships with experts to better understand what the research demonstrated, and bringing all of that together into one youth-led and evidence-based program.Yes, we were doing this alongside full-time university and then full-time work; no, we didn’t have much of an idea about how to start a business. We were just incredibly clear on our vision. We won’t lie, our first launch in 2019 was rough. We found we were often dismissed merely asa result of being young, and we received rejection after rejection by education institutions who were hesitant to change the status quo. However, we kept advocating despite the pushback, because we knew wholeheartedly that young people were demanding a change and deserving of a change.2021 was a turning point. As a result of sustained national advocacy efforts, awareness of the need for consent education was spread throughout Australia. Angelique took a leap of faith, leaving her career to become the Consent Labs’ first employee and CEO at 24 years old. It’s been 8 years, and neither of us have looked back since.– Angelique Wan, CEO & Co-Founder, and, Dr. Joyce Yu, Executive Director & Co-Founder
